EASY DIY DOLLHOUSE WALLPAPER
EASY DIY DOLLHOUSE WALLPAPER
It's so wonderful having a miniature home decor project. You can try things out and be so brave with colour, pattern, texture and more. Things you would love to have in real life are fun to experiment with in miniature scale. What might cost a fortune in real life and signal a big commitment in wall preparation, measuring and hanging can be a simple, easy and satisfying job in miniature. And it takes nearly no time at all!
Purchasing dollhouse wallpaper is normally expensive as it comes on a scrap book paper sized sheet that needs to be carefully cut so that it can go all around the room. Often it is either too wide or too high and you end up needing to buy a lot to ensure that the pattern matches. Another option is to buy adhesive vinyl wallpaper with the design scaled to size (I sell this via spoonflower too) but it is quite a commitment as you need to purchase a 60cm width. You might only need enough for a mini feature wall that is 25cm wide! So how can you access the best designs without forking out an arm and a leg - especially if you want to start your dolls house right away? (I know from experience that the ten day to three week shipping wait when ordering from spoonflower is not ideal when you have an exciting project that you want to begin!). Plus, when you finally find time for your dollhouse renovation, the time is NOW!
Quick tips for minimal mistakes:
1) Use a diluted PVA solution and a sponge so that you can glue lightly (LESS Glue means less puckering!) Beware - you need to test your printer ink first for water-fastness. A glue stick also works OR you can even print directly onto matte adhesive sticker paper for an easy DIY.
2) Measure your room carefully and cut the paper to size first. Equip yourself with a small ruler (I've tried using a 30cm one before - and guess what? It doesn't fit!)
3) Apply a light layer of glue to the wall and then use a soft cloth to smooth the paper down onto the wall.
4) Use a scalpel (surgical style ones are best) to get into tiny corners and trim excess.
5) Leave to dry and stand back and admire your handiwork.
The cool thing about downloading a printable wallpaper is that if you make a mistake (it can be a bit fiddly!), you can simply print another sheet and begin again in a jiffy.
Common mistakes are usually down to inaccurate measuring or lack of care when gluing. A handy tip is to use blue-tac to begin with so that you can 'prop' your wallpaper up in your house and check your sizing before committing to glue. You can also use double sided tape if you plan to remove it to change your decor - but bear in mind that the paper might rip when you pull it out! Standard photocopy paper works fine provided you don't work it too much but you can also take the file down to a local printer to print onto a slightly thicker paper if you like.
I love looking at dollhouse renovation projects! There's something magic about the teeny tiny spaces and the teeny tiny furniture and something oh-so-satisfying about setting up little rooms and scenes in miniature. If you browse etsy using the search term 'miniatures' you will find some amazing little additions to your dolls' home. Similarly on instagram search with the hashtags #dollhousereno #miniatures #dollhouse #tiny and you are rewarded with some cuter-than cute decorating options.
My latest 100 day project is to shrink my textile designs and make them available as instant dollhouse wallpaper downloads to print at home via my etsy store. Of course all of my designs are available in 'real life scale' too! I can design wallpaper (and fabric) to match your project and I can change colours of existing designs too. If it's not yet loaded to my etsy store but you have seen it elsewhere (like in my wallpaper look book) then let me know and I can easily load it. If you want to step it up a level and use adhesive vinyl for your dollhouse project, then I can rescale my designs and order it for you too. You will need to pay local shipping but the international shipping is on me. Otherwise, of course, the download and print option is really cost effective!
How can I get your dollhouse wallpaper?
Head to my etsy store and have a browse. Press buy now and you will get instant access to a high res A4 landscape PDF file that you can print in colour using a standard home colour printer. It's so easy and quick! (I've got a HP Deskjet printer and it prints nicely on standard photocopy paper).
There's a bonus too! The paper also makes great wrapping paper for small gifts! And you can use it as a delightful screen wallpaper too! Digital wallpaper! Who knew?!
Happy Happy Happy! Wallpaper makes me happy.
